How could they?

How could they?

A Poem by Jacky O'r
"

It was called "great"

"

How could they

At the blow of a whistle

Stagger up the trenches

To run into the bullets

Until they fell

How could they

As the night wind bristled

Hands and teeth clenched

Listen to the cry of the wounded

Never to be reached

How could they

For one holy night

Join the chorus of Stille Nacht

In the moonlit wasteland

Ruined lives in a peaceful moment

How could they

Sitting pretty out of range

Drive these soulless pawns

For an illusive glory

And an inch on the map

How could they?
