Can't see the Trees

Can't see the Trees

A Poem by Ink Angel
"

Im really angry today, heres some harsh words about technology.

"

Can’t see the Trees

Can’t see the trees, for the electromagnetic smog.

It’s so thick like pea soup, frying our brains

Entering our bodies through different zones,

Upsetting our meridians and our natural body flow.

They call it progress, Oh is that right!

Making us forget our social skills, how to interact, face to face

Losing the capability to associate

Can’t see the trees losing our way

PS, DS, and the Xbox, there he sits, alone in his room

Relishing in all the doom and gloom, more addicted day, by day.

Caught up in the crossfire of C.O.D on the way, acting out what is actually

Happening miles away, as some poor lad has had his day!

Mobile phones, they are just the best, we can’t even switch off

It’s like we lost the right, twelve missed calls tonight!

Actually I don’t want to speak, I just want to sit here and be.......

The drunk fueled messages, I didn’t think I sent, Oh yes it went!

The harsh words I text and then regretted

Hey! But it’s too late! They are already said.

The Kindle, this ones the saddest of all

What happened to picking up the old book tattered and torn?

But yet such a story to tell.

The old book in the charity shop, smell the pages feel the history,

It holds within its sweet gilt edged pages,

All the hard work, that’s gone into those books, over the years

The blood, sweat and tears.

Slipping away, to be replaced by a tablet.

What effect will this have on the poems and books, we hold so dear.

Last but not least, the vile, mobile phone mast, that’s a blast!

Let’s put it in the middle of a housing estate

Give all the neighbours cancer.

It would be nice if they had their say!

Stick it on top of a block of flats give all the residents a couple

Of hundred quid, live lives for today, or what’s left of it anyway!

We need these things, they are a necessary evil

And we do enjoy them without a doubt, I guess we d be lost without them.

But please don’t lose sight of the trees and all that lies beneath.

Get out and feel the grass under your feet.

I love the last stanza.
Scratch that, I love the whole poem. It's very enviromentalist, bordering paranoid, and I love it. Okay, so you probably didn't want it to sound paranoid, but that's just my interpretation. I like paranoia. It's interesting.
I liked the quip about cancer. My younger brother had to do a project on the pros and cons of radiation at school and he loves to make animations on the computer. For every single pro he had, his con was cancer. It was hilarious to watch the little cartoon figures dying comically and piling up, but it hit home. It's true - all these things can give you cancer.
I'm with you on Kindles as well. I love the feel and smell of a new book. I'm a bit of a collector too - books practically line my walls at home. I also get CDs instead of downloading songs (even though I then put the music straight onto my iPod). Without holding the object in your hand, you can't appreciate it properly. You can't rip the plastic off and truly own it the way you could if you bought the book/CD.

Right, I'm going to stop ranting now.
Great poem - you really got me thinking.

So true! I wrote an article touching on the very same subject on my blog recently...It is so sad to see children cooped up like hens, with no space to run, fixated on the screens with their square eyes!!
Loved the poem, it reads very well with excellent flow, I really enjoyed this one.

You make a good point with every word. I have set limitations on how long my son is allowed to play his PS3, he doesn't like it but, at 15 years old, he needs to be doing other things...enjoying life and spending time with friends and family. There are 6 of us in my house, we have 1 kindle keyboard, 3 kindle fires, and a kindle touch...5 of us have cell phones...the list goes on and on...it's the world we live in.
BUT it is sad that technology rules everything. The city I live in had 2 major bookstores close...I know the kindle is at fault. However, I love the convenience and prices of books on my kindle...after my spine surgery last year, I was unable to do or go anywhere for a few months...my kindle helped me to keep reading when my hands wouldn't allow me to hold a book. But I LOVE the smell and feel of a book in my hands, turning pages. I have approx. 250 books (and growing) they are precious and comforting to me.
You did a great job with your poem, I like the form and flow.
Keep Writing and thank you for sharing!
