Dragonfly

 

 

 

 

A dragonfly is quite a fella,

his story I'm about to tell ya!

Once upon a time out there

a dragon flew around somewhere

and chanced to spy a butterfly

a fly so fine, he thought he'd die.

 

He ran and chased that dainty bug

and caught her in a big old jug.

Once at home he unscrewed the lid

and for her love he made a bid

with words so sweet he wooed her long

until at last she heard his song.

 

Incredibly the pair developed

a Platonic love that enveloped

them in a bliss they thought the best

until, alas, came some distress.

They had no children of their own

but dragon seeds could not be sown.

 

The dragon was a real nice guy,

he did not like to hear her sigh.

He said 'Your antennae I'll not bend

and you to heaven I'll never send.

Why not, given our limitation,

artificial insemination?'

 

The butterfly thought, 'What a guy,

we'll certainly give it a try!'

And amazingly their gene pools melded

and heaven above a great bug welded,

a creature blessed right from the start

with strength and beauty and a heart!

you created a mythological character...could elaborate this into a children's book with illustrations...would be a nice lesson about how different species can love each other...
love knows no boundaries..

this is cute in one sense...but reminds me of different races and religions and how discriminatory they are against mixed relationships...

this is, as i said, such a nice lesson in universal love...and where it can fly.

Thank you Jacob for your take on my poem. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's true that there aren't a lot of species that intermix. I was delighted to find that artists had already mixed dragons and butterflies in paintings when I looked for a graphic. There really is nothing new under the sun! Have a very nice evening, Jacob.

Thank you, zainul. It's so nice to meet you. I was fascinated by your poem. We do not have reciters in the US. The poets themselves sometimes read their own works at gatherings, but we do not have people who just read others' works.

I also observed that you cleverly integrated scientific concept of artificial insemination which may enlighten some of the readers about this important aspect of applied science.
Recitation might help inspire the poets and readers to enjoy the value of poems.
I understand that many schools,colleges and universities offer courses on creative writing.
Adding recitation in those courses might be very helpful for all concerned.
I hope that poets in WC may influence the authorities to include recitation in their curriculum.
