Waves crash against the shore,
As an eerie peace of twilight hangs over the world,
Seemingly unwilling to concede to the chaos of darkness,
In the infinite vastness of space,
Stars begin to twinkle,
Almost as if to diminish the sadness of the setting sun,
As it disappears below the western horizon,
Before eyes of awe the brilliance of colors,
A fiery ball of burnt orange and amber,
Trailing the edges are sunset's afterglow,
Appearing larger than life an optical illusion,
Of you by my side marveling in warmth.
Reminiscent of a thousand times before,
When I knew not the devastation of depression,
And steps were ordered by the innocence found in ignorance.
The cadence for a meticulous march is oh so familiar,
A hypnotic rhythm which leaves me in a state of jubilee,
It is the beating of my battered yet hopeful heart,
Seen in the infinite flicker of one massive star.
However, darkness lies with its promise of love,
Underneath shining moon beams of romance,
And within the radiance of star-studded glitter,
Is the contradiction between my heart's desires.
Laughter without mirth is a thing of fantasies,
Just as is life without pain.
Ironically, I tremble in an effort to contain this oddity;
The evidence of my contentment is palpable,
While surreal sorrow from which I suffer lies dormant,
In a personification of a sleeping volcano,
Though this peace is only temporary,
It exists today, here...now,
And for this, I am thankful.
Regret for the moment when it is no more,
As it hides in the caverns of consciousness,
Ready and waiting to engulf me completely,
Once the light of reality meets common knowledge.
Like a fly to a midden heap,
So am I drawn to sadness.
Search as I may for comfort,
There is no real joy found.
So, I must traverse the tumultuous cliffs of happiness,
And hope that a fall from these heights,
Will not be the end of this Age of Illusion.
