What Was It Like?

What Was It Like?

A Poem by Flopp
"

What was it like? - inspired by real war events

"

What was it like?

I remember what it used to be like,

Little children running in fear,

Violence and abuse was everywhere,

So I set off on a hike,

To find peace and happiness,

Instead I got into a mess.

I remember what I did then,

I became a soldier with lots of other men,

To kill our fellow creatures,

We became crushers.

I didn’t want to do it,

But I had to or they would’ve thrown me in a pit.

I remember how they used to scream,

I wished it was a bad dream,

We used to shoot and blow,

To get rid of “the foe”,

But we didn’t have an enemy,

Our enemy was ourselves…

It was me

I remember what I used to say

Was it worth it to kill and slay?”

Why is war winning and

Ruling like a king over the living?”

I like the poem, especially the last stanza. It leaves you with real and important questions. Why, indeed, is war winning? The poem overall has a very real feel to it, and I could picture the narrator sitting down to write it in the aftermath of the war. Thanks for sharing this intriguing poem!
