its a style of Japanese poetry, Senryu and Haiku. they are meant to be three lines of 17 syllables (5-7-5), also known as on's (Japanese morae).

Senryus are concerned with human foibles. Haikus are concerned with nature or the seasons.

Forgive the ignorance. Just learning these things. What are syllables?

the beats in a line. for example:

"A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse"
(Da da, da da, da da, da da)- this is the metre, or rhythm.
The syllables however, in this instance there are 10

"A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse"
(1 2, 3 4, 5 6-7 8 9 10) (6-7/ king-dom)
