Fields of War

Fields of War

A Poem by James McFadyen

The fields of war stretch yonder far
Beneath a blanket of foreign stars
Whose soils are arid, sands cast red
An exposed tomb for "Our Glorious Dead".

We men are many, our courage few
So let we send them to fight for you
Let we be safe in our green hillock dens
And await the call for them home again

Bundle them close, you mothers and daughters
Cradle them once more, a child than a soldier
Relieve their bruised hearts, let them have tears
Least no forget their comrades dear.

"Oh sanctuary Mother England" keep them from harm
retell them humanity and forget them their arms
Show them the lush green fields unfoiled
Your floral grandeur, your fertile soils.

Alas, we were fooled, no home safe from harm
We could not hold them close within our arms
As we bury our dead, and heave our hearts so sore
Remember how vast is that field of war.

Hi James a very pertinent, timely and sad piece. Maybe a little crafting. Will PM you some ideas
