Sink or Swim...

Sink or Swim...

A Poem by Jamestown

Life & Choices...

Sink or Swim...

With life comes trials and tribulations
decisions and choices,

Riffled at us at mach speeds as it sometimes
seems,

As we sit floating in the vast ocean of life
holding our breath to stay afloat,

These trials and tribulations, decisions and choices
continue to title wave themselves toward us like
an out of control typhoon,

Never seeming to ease up as the massive
waves violently crash and crush our lives
like a great white taking a bite out of it's prey,

As the unforgiving lives we live seem to be
swaying with the current we must come to
the simple conclusion,

Sink or Swim,

So much easier said then done
but a conclusion I'm positive all of us have
had to come too in our lives,

Some days I think to myself why continue to
hold my breath and for what,

And other days I think I could not and
will not ever give up my struggle to keep my head
above the water,

As the current pushes and pulls me in any which
direction it chooses, I try to control my thoughts
knowing I have no control of life's crazy and out of
control current,

But today I choose to swim
and today I will pray that tomorrow I will not sink...

Author's Note

Jamestown
Life can be Sink or Swim situations sometimes,
I feel as if I'm going through some difficult current lately,
but God is good and I will swim to shore:)

I agree, life can be sink or swim, & you've carried this "sea" and "swimming" metaphor nicely thru-out your message. I get a slight sense that your message is not only referring to "sink or swim" as something that happens TO us, but it can also be a coping mechanism that comes from within us. As you describe in stanzas 10 & 11, we often waver between "why continue to hold my breath?" and "I will not ever give up my struggle!" . . . I believe both these basic human responses are necessary, working in tandem, as we survive very difficult things in life. Your depiction of this struggle is realistic & honest.

That's a very message for readers at the end of your poem. Surely you would be the sailor and swimmer of your own kind. God bless you.

Better to swim in a different direction and find what you need.
"But today I choose to swim
and today I will pray that tomorrow I will not sink.."
I do understand the above lines. Good wisdom shared in the amazing poetry my friend.

Your welcomes :)
A fantastic comparison of life to a sea; a creature which can be the most chaotic thing or most soothing object. Very well written and honest. I love the repetition of "sink or swim"; it's the ultimate motto of our lives. We can either let it get the best of us or we get the best out of it.

I look forward to reading more of your work when I have more time on my hands! I love the rawness of your words. Well done :)

We have to take the decision for life often has trials and tribulations. I like the positive attitude especially the last two lines:
...
But today I choose to swim
and today I will pray that tomorrow I will not sink...

This is pretty cool. Not in the subject of what is being said, but the way that you describe it. I think much of life is filled with struggle and many times you are forced to either sink or swim. Thanks.
