American As Apple Pie

American As Apple Pie

A Poem by Robert Luna
"

This is a spoken word piece and my current thoughts. I hope you enjoy.

"

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

I am an American
The red, white and blue
Born and bred and often confused
and I reserve the right NOT to remain silent
Allowing my voice to be heard
As anything I say can and will be used against me
but that’s what I want
that’s why I write, that’s why I live
words are like actions
and I want my actions to define exactly for which I stand
One nation under god, but what god is that
The almighty dollar it would seem
Liberty and justice for all
all those that can afford it
Being brought up lower middle class
Governmental term for poor white trash
Seems liberty and justice has always been outside my reach
But I don’t dare preach
It’s just my testimony
as take the stage and make it my pew
and I spew line after line of the truth
I am a product of a misspent youth
Lived my life on the fly
And thank god I never died
or served any time
.
.
These hands and this mind
are my weapons of choice
Picking up a pen and started to fight
Using this God give gift to write
Not knowing if it’s a blessing or a curse
can only be described as the best and the worst
I didn’t ask for the insomnia that fills my nights
but I can’t turn off my mind with the lights
I am an American
and I will never pledge allegiance to the flag
of this United States
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
I pledge my allegiance to America and the Americans
that stand and that have stood
as individuals and as a whole
The forgotten victims and soldiers of life
As I stand here throwing you a life line
Trying my damnedest to open your eyes
To this current state of fear
It does matter what your hear
The government is known to lie
As it tries to take away your rights
Tell me you never wanted more than this
and I will stop talking now
But ain’t it funny that the fact
our real enemies our sitting back
reaping the benefits of someone else’s masterminded attack
knowing we would overact
to that slap
We have all been deceived
lead to believe
we were fighting for a high purpose…freedom

I am an American
and I reserve the right NOT to remain silent
Please use anything I say against me
I’m only speaking my mind
and that’s my right

I am an American

I pledge my grievance towards the flag of the divided states of America
and to the republic which used to stand for something but now is just
a greedy nation without God where liberty and justice is for sale

That would be a more honest version. They say we are indivisible but break the nation down into red and blue states every election on television for the whole republic to see. great piece of work here Robert.

This is great slam poetry. I can just picture you on stage in some smokey, back alley poetry club, fire in your eyes, anger barely controlled, audience hooked on to every word in a near catatonic state - it's nice to see that you've never lost your power with words. I sound like a broken record when I say this, but well done my friend. As always, well done.

Damn straight my friend... the power needs to return to the people for we are the ones that are the true back bone of this nation and yet are treated like a disease... corporations get bailed and we pay for it in the end but when we can't afford our way of life where is our government then... we must all speak up and be heard, change is need now to return this nation to the land of the free.

I really do not want to comment on these writings, somehow I feel I do not have the right to interfere
but there are things that concerns me and you my friend and the whole world..
As anything I say can and will be used against me
but that's what I want
that's why I write, that's why I live...
but what did you say to be used against you my friend,if thats how it is now over there ,then we have more democracy
in iraq ,we can talk much more...
But ain't it funny that the fact
our real enemies our sitting back
reaping the benefits of someone else's masterminded attack
knowing we would overact
to that slap
We have all been deceived
lead to believe
we were fighting for a high purposefreedom

yes its a shame ..i have always known America to fight for what is right
we used to sing of America and the American dream
but look what have we become..
a shattered nation ,a devastated country..becuase of greed my friend
we are not enemies..there are some Iraqis who dont know till now
whats this war for..why is all this blood shed..why all the chaos..
and look at the mess the whole world has gone to ..i do not know much about politics
but i strongly believe its the wrong policies of governments who brought all the plague
why is all that for..no one can stop this madness..the whole world is so hurt..
who will put things back together..who could ..i doubt anybody could do anything..
not before some fifty years from now..i dont think we will live to see it
really wonderful write..

I agree your internal rhythm really does rock, Robert! I love how you write with such passion and I love the last stanza for it says it all for me. Great piece!!!

I'm mad at the government at the moment and feel as you do in many ways.

I don't mean to have a little rant here and hijack your poetry but I am really worried about this country right now. I just did a segment recently on the economic crisis (or lack of one) in my state. I didn't feel as strongly then as I do now, but we have sooo much to be worried about today.

Wow wee is right. I like that you started out with the Pledge of Allegiance. It sets the proper tone for your words ... and your internal rhyme always rocks...Great writing, Robert!
