Grow Up

Grow Up

A Poem by Robert Luna
"

This was written after a conversion with a dear friend of mine. We were talking about how people call us dreamers and other colorful descriptions. Hope you enjoy

"

Grow up

.

Grow up Robert.. just grow up

Something I hear more times than I care mention

Really no sure what they mean

Is it because I still have dreams

Even though

I have no idea what I want to be

other than just me

Or is it that you want me to be like you

Allowing money to make the decision for

everything and all that I do

Giving up friends

For dividends

Being more worried about making the Benjamins

Allow a suit and tie to define who I am

Askew my view so far I wouldn’t know

where it is, I exactly stand

Sit back and watch the depleting

ultimate deleting of musicians, painters, and writers

The real life fighters who are dying

Creativity giving way to salaries, and job security

Awaiting 401k plans to reach maturity

Am I naïve too believe

I can change the world

with the stroke of my pen

Shouting out my words

Allowing them to be carried by the wind

as I stand toe to toe with a foe

even though I know I won’t win

But I’ll never stop swing these words

Like a cardboard swords at invisible dragons

Because I couldn’t imagine

Being define be the 9 to 5 only to find

time has passed me by

Sowing your seed only to find you sold your soul

Reaching to the sky

for your piece of the America pie

and then you find

It’s rotten on the inside

Realizing you have no one else to blame

Being left emotionally lame

Playing the game in search for some sort of fame

And it seems you mocking me

Gives you the means to fulfill your dreams

of being better than me

Telling me to Grow up

Shut up

Stop spouting verbal throw-up

but the funny thing is

You were once like me

Now it’s just a tale you tell

about your youth that has slipped away

as you search for the truth that’s for sale

to fill that gaping hole in your soul

Even though my journey maybe set for a bumpy road

I find comfort to know it was all worth it

And you say you pity me

But really it’s me that pities you

Even though my journey maybe set for a bumpy road
I find comfort to know it was all worth it
And you say you pity me
But really it's me that pities you

Ending up with a worthwhie life is a trick in itself :)
Growing up , hmmm not sure what that means
but plenty who have live to regret it
and dreams keep us alive

What would this world be like without writer's without poets who weave dreams and havens from words.
What would our world be like if not for the dreams of dreamers to take us away from the harsh realities of this world if only for a few moments. It would be a dull world indeed without dreams without diversions to rest our weary minds.
I have been away from the Cafe for awhile and have so missed the reading of all my friends wonderful works, and you Robert, perhaps more than any other writer, writes pieces suited to the mood of the world, you acknowledge the reality of things and write about the hopes and fears of our time in broad strokes and fine detail.

A powerful piece............. Don't let anyone take your dreams away, for without dreams we are nothing.

Yeah I love it when people try to box you into their idea of progress and maturity. I just can't get enough of it. Many people whose dreams or ideas take them outside of society's values are considered immature, and they deal with people telling them this constantly. This poem is a perfect assault on everything that latter group tells us. I like how you even bring up, "you were like this once," hinting that they had dreams that didn't involve being trapped in a cubicle, but have since sold out. Thanks for this post. Found it most enjoyable.

First of all, stay strong and true to yourself. I've had to remind myself that many times over the last week as I am dealing with sudden unemployment. We can't let the typical take over or else at that point, as you wonderfully pointed out, it will eat away at our creativity and it's almost as if it's harder to get it back that it was to find it.

All that being said, I really enjoyed this piece. There were instances of anger, sarcasm, and even a thumbed-nose at people who don't have any faith in you. You put different feelings into one piece and that's always something I've admired about your writing.

It's great to read your writing. It has been a long while. But that's all my fault. My bad.

I caught this at Facebook. Good stuff, Robert. Really strikes a chord with me. I can relate to requirements on the outside trying to change what is on the inside and it not changing to meet what others think it should be.

Cheers, My friend!
We are not what others would like us to be.

Awesome write and I totally understand what you mean.
We can change the world with our pens, after all shakespeare did.
Favourite part:
Giving up friends
For dividends
There are a few typos, nothing serious just a few letters missing in places.

Why some people think that money defines a person's character... many will literally sell their soul to the devil for it, then they wind up burning alone... you have always been great at these power rants as you not only make a great statement but interject humanity with pure emotion. Great to se you writing again.
