what used to be

what used to be

A Poem by Donald Olds

As my mind wanders round
Through the silence looking for the sound
The sound that once was
The beckoning light when I was lost.
Sifting through the dreams
Meandering through the memories.
Wishing it could see
The love that used to be.

What used to be you and me
Now seems to be nothing but a distant memory.
A love so strong a joy so pure
There not much more I can endure.
Though I hurt I still wonder
About that sound that was sure to be heard all
Around.
The sound of two hearts beating as one
A bond that could never be undone.

Of what used to be.

Now it's late and I can hardly see.
Even though there's nothing but a sheet between
You and me
Miles it seems before I can feel the warmth
That used to be.

What a melodious refrain about what used to be. A total joy!
