Our Last Night Together.

Our Last Night Together.

A Poem by Donald Olds

Our Last Night Together

Turn the lights down low,

to light a few candles.

Waiting for you to show,

the nerves are overwhelming.

Play some soft music

as you walk through the door.

But as I look into your eyes I know something

is wrong.

Akward silence for such a beautiful glow.

Longing looks suspended in the

air, never quite making it across the table.

Never making the connection.

Blow out the candles, turn the

lights back on, and I see your face shimmering;

black and blue streaks pouring out from around your

eyes onto your cheeks.

Ending the night with only a hug and a tearful good-by.

With what started out as a beautiful summer evening,

quickly turned colder than the coldest winters.

For that was our last night together.

I felt like I was the one waiting for her to come home so I could see her for the last time it moved me seeing how descriptive it got.

You painted the scene so vividly, I could easily feel that emotional plummet. Pulled me in effortlessly. Lovely and heart wrenching.

Ouch, that cut like a knife made of ice. You made that very powerful. I think I'm going to limp away from that one.
