Red Queen

Red Queen

A Poem by Layla J Omorose

RED QUEEN

Red Queen with the black heart

Ruler Queen with a cold soul and iron fist

A wicked witch they call you,

Behind your back, wagging tongues that throw sharp daggers at your soul.

Cut eyes made under bowed heads when in your presence

Frightened bunnies that cower under your sharp whip tongue.

Laughed and ridiculed at for your uneven proportions.

Never as good as her

Beautiful and perfect she haunted your dreams.

Feelings of inadequacy stoned an otherwise soft heart.

Loneliness and hate your best friends

Spoke to you everyday behind palace walls

Sat alone in your study and learned the king’s war plans.

And when the time came

Perfection overthrown…

Your reign Supreme.

Red Queen with a sorrow filled breast.

The whole kingdom feels your wrath,

Meaner than your black jabberwocky

Beheadings in abundance

Still joy eludes your grasping claws.

Not when Alice...with her blonde hair and beauty came into your kingdom.

She stole your dark knight, killed your beloved pet…

Banishment was what awaited you.

Red Queen deserted in the far sand.

A hollowed heart that never knew joy.

How could they blame you for your detest?

They drove you to this.

Red Queen with the forever black heart

The over thrown ruler Queen with a shattered soul and worn down fist.

They cheered when the witch was dead.

Your name was crossed off their list.

Hmm...I like this. It has something, a repetitiveness that captured my attention. I'm a big fan of dropping the title of a poem into a work, and this with multiple drops has me excited. Villains are also one of my favorites.

I believe that no one is born into wickedness, especially in old stories and fairy tales. So this poem, giving insight into the hows and whys of the Red Queen is very intriguing and stimulating for me. This pieces...fills me with sympathy for the devil you might say. Especially that last stanza.

"They cheered when the witch was dead."

It makes me want to write a story where the masses cry when the villain dies. And for that, giving inspiration to one who has been long without, I thank you.

Great poem.

I have an absolute obsession with Alice in Wonderland, and I thought this was absolutely beautiful.
It really does make you think twice about who was really the bad guy.
