Tardigrades

Tardigrades

A Poem by Julia Simoneau
"

This is a metaphor I wrote on a whim.

"

Although you may not know me,

I am the strongest animal on Earth.

I can live at the bottom of the deepest sea,

In places colder than the Arctic,

Or in places hotter than El Azizia.

I have been to space

And have survived its vacuum.

You can’t find me in a zoo,

Like a polar bear or a chimpanzee.

You can’t see me without help,

But I always see you

As I sip the water

From the moss.

Open your mind

To all the life around you.

I may be small,

But I matter too.

Author's Note

Julia Simoneau
I wrote this poem on a whim. It's a metaphor. Oh, and it's the third poem I have ever written.

--------------------------------------
ABOUT TARDIGRADES: A Tardigrade is a microscopic organism that can survive all harsh environment, including space. NASA has sent Tardigrades into space, released them, unprotected, in open space. When astronauts brought the Tardigrades back into the shuttle, the Tardigrades were still alive. By the time they came back to Earth, some made perfectly healthy Tardigrade babies. Tardigrades are the super heroes of the animal world, although they often go unsung. They just spend their days sucking water off of moss, while nobody cares to know about them.

Great stuff, I love it. I like the idea of thinking ourside our limited view of life. And your poem is just soooo right, there is so much more life around us than we normally think about. It is a shame we are so blinkered to it normally, as we might be a better species if we were and it might improve our chances of extending our own life form. Compaed with many species we have only just started out! But will will get much older I wonder? And so your poem is brillant. And I havejust read your note which makes me appreciate it the more. Hurrah for Tardigrades! And hurrah for moss! And what a privilege to read a poet's third poem. Write more.
