Flint and Steel

Flint and Steel

A Poem by Martin

I hold in my possession

A piece of flint

And one of steel.

They sit numbingly

In my pocket.

And I know

They are there,

I haven’t forgotten

Because there is

A stirring.

They flirt with

The lint in

My pocket but

I cannot burn

From the outside

In.

Just as my soul

Should not be

Defenseless

As it often

Is

First a spark,

I feel, and love.

Your beauty,

Oh divinity

Lives.

Then a flame

From within

Radiates out

And knowledge is free

And flows in.

In and out

I fully breathe

I am within her

Existence.

Her spirit whispers

A humble tune

As we breathe

And our hearts bound

In unison.

This is when

The two become one

There is no beginning to you

There is no end to me.

And when all

Is said and done,

You speak delicious

 words to me.

you give me a peach,

and wonder away

Oh, Divinity, lest I forget,

I will hold these pieces

in my pocket.

And though this fire

Became fading ember,

I will remember.

Tomorrow, I shall

Hit the flint

With this piece of steel

And start a new fire

From within.

The cycle will continue

Because I will remember

First the spark,

Then the flame,

Then the fading ember.

ohh my stars, this is a poetic marvel indeed. you must forgive the prolix which follows, as i tend to get carried away by the smoke of fiery thought
*
this reminded me so much of a favorite passage of a book i have read until it quite literally fell apart...
“It was more like when flint strikes steel and the
spark fades almost too fast for you to see. But still, you know it’s there, down where you can’t see, kindling.”
~ patrick rothfuss
... you have managed to kindle the same emotion/passion,/yearning in your words.
the extended metaphor doesn't feel strained or forced at any point which in itself is an accomplishment.
a fine write, a wonderful read
