We Forgotten

We Forgotten

A Poem by Alex P.
"

A look at the darker side of Christmas

"

We Forgotten

The lights glitter so brightly around me,

The faces glowing with holiday cheer and spirit

Warm smells of gingerbread and peppermint surround me,

Oh, how happy they all look

That’s all I can do,

Look but not touch

The warmth they feel is foreign to me,

Their laughter something unreachable

I wander these icy streets alone,

Cold and forgotten this lonely Christmas night

And while the children dream of sugarplums and Santa Claus,

I pray for the warmth of a fire-lit living room,

And the languorous feeling of turkey dinner by tree-light

We forgotten don’t want much,

A place to sleep,

A warm jacket to shield from the cold,

Some food in our hunger-shrunken stomachs,

Survival

Sure, we may be bums,

          Drunks

                   Addicts

                             Addle-brained

But we’re people too, aren’t we?

Aren’t we?
