Ode To Goanna

Ode To Goanna

A Poem by KWP

today a goanna,

strong, sleek in style,

moved close to my surrounds

sharp claws

lock jaw

sliding tail

black, slink, yellow tiled skin

tongue flits

upon ants and bugs

looking for something

more filling

I move, he stops

unmoving

he waits motionless

unaware of time

attuning himself again with

his current surrounds

a bird lands

on a nearby twig

I observe the statued goanna

considering - in the heat of the day

eating the tiny bird

for lunch

keen eyed bird senses

impending danger - flutters away

goanna contemplates

clawing up the bark of

that thirty foot eucalyptus

waiting

waiting

no rush

waiting

decides against the climb

next time I see him

he’s making a ruckus

atop he chicken shed

oh

as I wonder just how in tune with nature

am I?

Very observent poem . I could see this unfolding in the emotion of both animals and how descriptive you were.

Lovely. You've turned a fearsome creature into a poem. Brava!

The animals in your country/continent f*****g terrify me. I don't know how you do it. Last night I thought I was tough throwing empty beer cans at the neighborhood raccoons that knock over my garbage cans. Goanna's get like 8 feet long don't they? That's a dinosaur... you live with f*****g dinosaurs. (and what's with all the huge poisonous snakes? Even the kangaroos can be jerks so I hear...)
