By the Sea

By the Sea

A Poem by Kate Ruta

By the Sea

The White Cliffs with the green Irish tops,

the sandy beach that goes for miles.

The pale sky, the frigid wind

blows along the sea shore.

The bluish-grey water sweeps

up towards the beach to

then slowly drift back to the free sea.

The white clapboards stick out

from the Irish green background.

The black rooftop with the brick fireplace stack,

The cherry door that opens to

a place to start a new life.

I have always longed for this new life,

this new life with him.

I stand by the water sticking my ivory skinned tone feet

into the blueish-grey frigid water.

Standing looking out at the openness of the sea.

I slowly walk down the sandy path

heading towards those Irish Cliff.

My waist being clutched

by your strong but gentle hands. Spinning me around,

lifting me up. Running towards the sea.

Wrapping my skinny dainty arms around your warm neck.

Holding on to you. Throwing my head backwards to laugh,

Kicking my feet backwards crossing my ankles. Just wanting

to hold on to you never wanting to never let you go.

As we laugh together you run into the icy water dropping me,

splashing me with the water. Running away from you laughing.

You chase after me, grabbing me again spinning

around in a circle.

I wrap my dainty arms around your tall body.

Together we stare out to the open sea and the pale sky.

This is the place to start a new life. A new life with you.

But this will never be.
