As You Are

As You Are

A Poem by Kay

if you looked in the mirror

completely naked and raw

with the eyes of a god

against society’s false law

without unconscious conformity

without tendency to flock

like mice or geese

or paint conjoined on a smock

with the deprivation of bias

and perspective in third

with the listening of a tree

that tenderly holds a hatching bird

an attentiveness self-owed

a self-kindness overdue

like a flower swaying itself

and soaking up the dew

if you could step out of critical shoes

and become your ideal mother

who looks upon her miracle

with love matched by no other

if you forgave the sullen past

and forgave the world alike

for the way it’s tortured you

razor blades and spike

if you took all stagnant injury

put on a band-aid of light

fused it through your chest

like a moon floods the night

looking as an artist stares to admire

like a magician’s audience claps in awe

as the author of your own dictionary

taking out a pen to redefine “flaw”

if you had the ability to truly see

like a telescope views from afar

like an astronaut views up close

you are beautiful as you are.

Beautiful.

Some very interesting imagery here. All of this is true, though. We are all perfect through our imperfections and our lack of want to conform, if we choose not to. Sometimes beauty is where people don't initially look.
