Mother Dearest

Mother Dearest

A Story by Tethered Eagle

Another bottle emptied tonight and another glass off the shelf.

Her breath reeks of sweet lies and broken promises that he has sung in her ears for far too long.

She knows better.

She knows what he says is a lie, that it is too good to be true, but she can't stop her hopes from soaring.

She can't help but want to believe the love he proclaims.

The bottle whispers that he loves her. And how can she not listen?

She needs to listen to it. She needs it to be true. For who could love her as she is?

There's no one standing outside her bedroom window asking for her to throw down her hair.

No one knocking at the door for her hand in marriage.

No one willing to carry the burden that she has faced alone for all these years.

This weight is crushing her. Pulling her down, and the silence of being alone is deafening.

So she empties that bottle of all its sweet serenades and basks in her temporary reality.

Where he loves her

Where his promises are never broken

Where she is not alone and never will be again.
