Pokemon Love

Pokemon Love

A Poem by Kelley Quinn

My face lights up when I spot the three pokeballs

Lying innocently upon Professor Oak’s table.

He turns to me, opens his mouth to speak, but then stalls.

I learn forward, hoping against the odds of what this could enable.

He smiles down at me, while I am bouncing on my feet,

And tells me I can have the pokemon of my choice.

For Oak to give away something so valuable, I knew this was a treat!

I examined each pokeball and said in a small voice,

“Can I have that one, please?”

Oak flashes a smile and gives me a nod,

But reminds me that training a pokemon is not a breeze.

I promise him I won’t be a hot rod.

When I leave Oak’s Laboratory, I go to bid my mother goodbye.

She tears up a bit, but I assure her I’ll be alrigh’

“Take care, stay safe!” She calls after me.

I give her a thumbs up and head for the path into the woods.

Pulling out my pokeball, I feel a rush of glee.

I release him from his ball, my pokemon, my charmander.

I hold him in my hands, taking a prolonged gander.

“Hey, little fella!” I say loud and clear.

He gives a stretch and a yawn,

But when he sees me, I see his eyes show a flash of fear.

“Don’t be afraid, we’re friends until you want me to be gone.”

A rustle is heard from my right.

I feel my charmander pause.

A bellsprout appears, and is only about half my height.

My charmander lets out a growl and brings out his claws.

“It’s okay, Charmy, he won’t bother us.”

The bellsprout gives us one more look over and then runs back into the dark.

“We’re pretty intimidating, I guess!”

Charmy lets out a huff of air, along with a small spark.

I smile, and cannot believe how lucky I got.

And yet, even now, for Charmy, I will always have a soft spot.

Even after so many years with my Charmy,

I knew there were so many things that we would be.

And now that we’ve made it through all of the training:

The gyms, the evil tyrants, the hard work,

I can feel our time together waning.

As I remember all of our times together, I can’t help but smirk.

Charmy was the best pokemom I ever had.

A friend to ward of those who would harm us is what we all need on occasion.

Charmy was the best pokemom I ever had.

Interesting last line.

Beccy.
