Painted Exterior

Painted Exterior

A Poem by Kelso A. Nicholson

You will find a strength in me I can only describe as gentle,
and in return, I will find in you, worthiness and admiration.
I have seen the others, breaking and beating each other down into nothingness
and I recede.
Then I see that small look upon your face, underneath that pained exterior,
and I am drawn back.
Drawn into your smile, your amber eyes, the way your name tastes in my mouth.
The conflict in me rises like heat does off the sidewalk,
in my dreams of summer in this frozen wasteland.
I will give you all you've been looking for and I will take it away.
You will give me everything a woman longs for and you'll give it away.
We are nothing and we are everything all at exactly the same time.
