My fathers dreams

My fathers dreams

A Poem by Kenny Alex

I had a dream once,
To be a professional basketball player,
I was 15 years old and the athleticism was there,
Fast forward im 16 standing 6 feet two,
I asked Life for chance,
It didn't let me through,
Educated in the game of basketball,
But not knowing life at all.

See the game of life is different,
Each mistake has a consequence,
So you got to be consistent,
See in the game of life,
you don't play alone,
Well some do,
But not every bird sings the same song.

So I asked my brother about it,
He thought the try was worth it,
Well I couldn't ask my dad,
How could I? I am African,
Not too many people make it in the NBA from Africa.
Besides I already knew what he was going to say,
Well not much he would've probably smacked me in the face,
So I ended up going to medical school.

Research has it that 80% of medical students,
Are forced in medicine clueless,
Well how do I think of this research? bullshit!
I think 90% or 95% of medical students have dreams,
Not to be a doctor but something else it seems,
Maybe next time you meet a doctor,
Try asking him what he wanted to be before he got older,
See life is a different game,
And once you make a wrong move it's never the same.
