The Beginning of the End

The Beginning of the End

A Chapter by Alex Vidmar

It came from the depths of Hell,
Rising and inhabiting the corpses.
Freshly dead ones only, strangely enough.
Loved ones came back, hungry and relentless.

At first no-one did a thing,
Fear and surprise stunned us all.
'Til the first living human died of a bite,
Then the crows began to sing.

We holed ourselves up in basements and schools,
Made weapons from scratch of old gard'ning tools.
Some left for other parts of Earth,
Just to escape this Hell-spawned birth.

We all lost family, friends, and hope.
Many took their own lives; unable to cope.
These undead spirits from beyond the graves,
Forced me to take refuge in an old bear's cave.

Lord Almighty, what the f**k have we done?
To walk, sleepless, forced to run?
Running from family, newly forgotten.
To save our own lives, however ill-gotten.

I've had to put to rest,
My wife and my kids,
And my parents still walk, shot in the chests.
Lord, please tell me what the f**k we did!

I hear one coming my way now.
Gotta go.

I liked it, though to me the way it appears seems more like a poem format than that of a story. But then again I feel as if I just read a journal entry of the character.

The smell of musky wood comes to mind in the first few lines.
