This Life, Year X

This Life, Year X

A Poem by Evelyn V James

 The current moves on.

Its cleansing, crushing theft of life

that pushes you to look in the mirror,

makes every trivial memory profound.

The double will always look different,

with each new weathered

smile.

As the current pulls,

the rain falls

and the sun sighs.

If a rainbow occurred every day,

it would be as common as cloud.

The full blue sky would otherwise be empty with expectation.

Its constant presence replacing longing absence.

The feeling of being close,

becomes close to being a routine.

The rainbow keeps by your side,

until your bedside is cold from the absence of the rainbow.

How can you prove a rainbow is what it is?

as it surely doesn't see itself as a rainbow.

The expression shouldn't be "Am I, am I, am I?"

but "I am, I am, I am".

There are those who cannot do much but question.
