Tighter, Oh Mighty One

Tighter, Oh Mighty One

A Poem by Kitty

Happiness only runs skin deep.

Each time I think I’ve found

A reason to smile,

A tiny speck of what happiness

Might feel like,

They find a way

To rob me of it.

Parents

Nothing I do is ever good enough.

I am always the ‘disobedient brat’

Who never does as she’s told.

But I’m 23 for God’s sake!

When will your hold on me loosen?

You have your hands around me throat

And you’re squeezing

Tighter,

Tighter,

Tighter.

I was just trying to help,

But ‘trying’ Has never been good enough.

Your insecurities have been forced onto me

And now I am as you are.

Just as you have never cared for me,

My caring for you has ceased.

Still your grip tightens,

But I no longer care.

I now encourage you.

Squeeze, oh brave and powerful one,

Squeeze.

Tighter,

Tighter,

I still see the light.

Squeeze, mighty possessor,

Squeeze.

Tighter,

Tighter,

Until the darkness settles in.

Well written, and I kind of feel your pain on this, because I know how parents can be. When I was younger, my parents pretty much didn't care where I went, what I'd do, etc.. I'm 23 now, and all I get from them is "Where are you going?" "What are you doing?" etc. I have other reasons for knowing how you feel as well, but I won't get into those, lol. At any rate, this is a really good write. Keep up the great work.

A powerful expression of love gone wrong, that I'm certain nearly anyone can relate to! Where love should offer freedom, it often is twisted into a suffocating oppression through anger, bitterness, and jealousy. You express this so well through your words!
