The Letter

The Letter

A Poem by Kristen Mae
"

For the contest, "The Letter"

"

It all started with the letter
As she read it’s words so fast
Twice more and then twice again
As if they were lying time and over

Throwing herself against the wall
As she screamed her words
“Damn it all!”
She pounded her first until they bled

“It can’t be, it just can’t!”
She exclaimed as she took the match
And lit that letter aflame
To watch it burn another name

Never to read it again
She threw the lighted letter
To the table and let it simmer
To spread the devious words away

“I hate you! I hate you all.”
As she imagined it was his fault
As the fire began to lick
The table beneath which she curled

Anger, Denial
All of which became fatal
As her lost husbands letter
Took the home and his wife

Maybe it was the anger
Maybe it was the war
Maybe it wasn’t true
As her burning fingers began to curl

If only he hadn’t gone
Done as she said
If only he had stayed in her arms
Maybe then he wouldn’t be dead

Her face began to turn
As the house continued to burn
And she knew that life would be fine
For she would find herself at his side

The authorities began to show up
As the ashes began to cool
The headlines of the papers told
The story of the house burned cold

A paper on a table sits
To tell the destruction of the burned house
And in the end it read forever
“It all started with the Letter”

You have summed up beautifully the anger and sudden grief of recieving that fateful letter "It is our sad duty to inform you..." Although nothing like that's ever happened to me, I'm sure that's exactly how I'd react. The line between heartbreaking sadness and tearful anger is often blurred. Keep it up!

Like all poems, you have a couple typos, but who cares?? It's a great poem, better that I could ever do!
