The Camera Lies

The Camera Lies

A Poem by Laura Harrison

People say that the camera never lies

This is wrong, for the pictures don’t portray what I feel inside

So don’t be fooled by the smile upon my lips

For the smile is just a trick

I smile to make people think that I am ok

I smile because there is no other way

Nobody would ever understand

Why I want to die by my own hand

So when you see a picture of me

Don’t believe all that you see

I may look like a girl with a dazzling smile and sparkling eyes

But remember that the camera lies

How many portraits, happy pictures posted, of people dying inside from unhappiness. I have on my fridge the most brilliant photo of a 15 year old girl who killed herself - the photo was taken only days before she did it. You captured this beautifully.

Your words are true. How many people are lost and no-one know why? Hidden fear and pain can create the need for the fake smile. I believe all of us need someone to be able to release the pain and the glory of a life. Hard to walk alone. Thank you for the excellent poetry.

You make a good point in this poem. I like how you write "the pictures don't portray what I feel inside" and the last stanza. Nice write.
