Just Add Me to The List of 'Depressed Poets'

Just Add Me to The List of 'Depressed Poets'

A Poem by Laura Harrison

When I was younger

and still had hold of my innocence

I could never understand why

poems were so poignant

and why every poet

was so sad

to me

life was still only filled

with rainbows and butterflies

everything to me

was just black and white

But now,

as I sit here at my writing desk

at 4:00am

with tears in my eyes

and a page inked with sorrow

and heart-breaking goodbyes

I can finally understand the sad poems

because there were plenty of times

when life became The Grim Reaper

begging me to die

and the only way to feel alive again

was to pick up a pen

and let my troubles leap from my mind

and onto the page.

There will be a day when you feel the flame of pure joy burning bright again. Poets are not all "sad" but they understand sadness I think. A poet also understands joy and hope, bliss and ecstasy. We are gifted and cursed because we voice the emotions of our fellow beings and even the cosmos... We channel these feelings back to those who read us.
Be the flame of joy and sorrow. Feel the burn and see the light... and then fulfill your sacred calling and write.
I enjoyed reading your poem.
