5 Outstanding College Traditions

5 Outstanding College Traditions

A Story by LeeMillerEst

Every college has its aura, its vivid community, and traditions that are meant to make the institution stand out of the crowd. Apart from making it stand out, traditions unite the community and help students become a more homogenous compound.

Here are 5 outstanding college traditions that will inspire you:

Little 500

This Indiana University tradition is one of the biggest bike competitions in the United States. Indianapolis 500’s younger sister is the place where teams of 4 race over a distance of 50 miles. This race is so famous that it was featured in movies such as Breaking Away.

The Great Midwest Trivia Contest at Lawrence University

Most traditions are sports related or fun related. This one, on the other hand, is for the ones who focus on having extraordinary results. For 50 straight hours, students compete against each other and try to get the top prize. This contest is considered to be one of the most exponential trivia contests in the world.

Penn University’s THON Weekend

Started back in the ‘70s, this tradition keeps on getting more and more attention. Why? Because it delivers what every student wants. And that’s fun, lots of it.

This 46-hour dancing marathon is the perfect place to make new friends, get in touch with the community and have lots of fun.

Apart from the entertaining part of the tradition, it also has a humanitarian objective. All the funds gathered during this dancing marathon are sent to Four Diamonds Fund to combat pediatric cancer.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge

Started in 2004, this tradition’s main purpose is to raise money for North Carolina’s Children Hospital. It’s a great example of community involvement and how it can be combined with an entertaining activity.

What’s it all about? Well, it consists of a 5-mile race, from NC State Uni to a Krispy Kreme shop and back. Basically, contestants have to run 2,5 miles to the shop, eat 12 doughnuts, and get back to campus as soon as possible.

Cadets vs. Civilians

Who said tech students don’t know how to entertain themselves never went to Virginia Tech. It’s the place to be when the first snow hits the hard drives. I’d recommend you wear a helmet, though!

Virginia Tech students used to be Reserve Officer Training Corps. This is where the name came from. Basically, during the first decent size snowfall, students split into two groups, cadets, and civilians. These two groups start a trench warfare in honor of the university’s history.

Conclusion

These are one of the most epic college traditions out there. They are meant to glorify university’s history, get involved in the community, and help the students connect. What’s your college’s most epic tradition?
