A Summer Poem

A Summer Poem

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

written on a hot day

"
you are the burnt map of Summer;
black- edged with lost words
that make the heat a blanket

full of stale-wind sweat,
lips dripping warm syllables
caught between dried smiles ;

the first rain so distant;
drought turning into dust:
you walked away over brown grass;

the Spanish grass.

Feeling the summer swelter in this poem, making me long for autumn even more...

It would seem strange to say there is heat in this. There is dessication also. But that is what it is about isn't it. I almost feel like I'm in a Spagetti Western. The opening frames of Once upon a time in the west. Complete with the soundtrack.

drought turning into dust:

nice and apt imagery, written beautifully.

An excellent poem. Love the imagery and descriptions you use.
Yes, the brown grass here needs a little life giving rain.
Impressive poem.
