18th Birthday

18th Birthday

A Poem by Askew

Happy birthday to Me.
You're officially an adult today,
18 on the 18th.
Do You feel older, Me?
Dozens of people are downstairs,
Celebrating in Your honour,
So explain what You're doing here.
Writing this.
Go enjoy Your party, Me!
You didn't get any gifts,
But don't be sad,
Your family is here.
They're down there waiting for You,
Loading their guns with opinions
And self-righteous taunts.
They're getting ready to aim the barrel
Right at Your dreams and desires.
Go on, Me,
Go face the crowd.
Accept their congratulations
On becoming legal.
What can 18 do for You?
Would You like to vote?
Perhaps open a bank account in Your own name?
Maybe sue someone?
Or is porn more Your style?
18 won't do much for You, Me.
You've gone another year
Where You've done nothing for Yourself.
Another year of wishing
There would be no more years.

Happy birthday to Me.
Be excited for 19,
When You can legally ruin Your life
Here in beautiful British Columbia.

You have written your perception of the party this is not to say that it isn’t true because what we perceive becomes our truth as we feel it happening whether it’s true or not you still feel it happened
But just what if what if they were missing you and wanted to party and be happy with you whilst you were upstairs writing just what if what you perceived to be true actually wasn’t true ps I watch a lot of dr Phil lol
I would love to be 18 again I praise you for your honesty and I like your writing
keep going I’m 60 believe me life goes fast like a fast train once you hit forty or have kids it flies as I said I would love to be 18 again keep writingxxx don’t waste your life being tooo sad I did I’ve been there hun as I said I applaud you for putting it all here and I look forward to one day you being happy and feeling content with your life it may take years and a miracle but it will happen I often look through my old diary and in it I see you there is light at the end we somehow grow old and accept and learn to love ourselves it’s taken me years ok I’m 60 and I look back and think what a waste I hated myself for 59 of them sorry if you may think I’m condescending you I’m not I’m saying enjoy your life if you can hon ok don’t make the the same mistakes I did

Reading this at the beginning I imagined a great big smile and as I read on, the smile slowly grew from congratulatory to haunting and I think the way you convey the conversation, you made that happen really well. Great job.
