Day and Night

Day and Night

A Poem by Alexa Tarvid

Your heart beats,
Start counting down,
Life is only here for a short while
Only to become a whithered leaf with only the wind to carry it.

A dancer moves
Trying with all her might
To bring the music back to life,
She dances day and night.

Breathe in,
Start breathing deeper,
Every breath could be the last
If only we cared.

A writer sits at his desk
Trying with all his might
To capture the meaning of life,
He writes day and night.

You shiver once more
As the fall breeze brushes your skin,
Leaves are falling all around
And yet the trees breathe not a sound.

An old woman looks out the window,
Alzheimers has taken her mind,
And yet she tries with all her might
To remember that forgotten life,
She cries day and night.

You brush the tear from your cheek,
If only the world wasn't so harsh,
If only the leaves never whithered
And the love never died.

A young boy lays in his bed,
Cancer has taken his life,
And yet his mother tries with all her might
To bring her son back to life,
She hurts day and night.

Life is a mere trick of time,
An illusion for the mind,
The truth is every minute is precious,
Every breath is one less,
Every heart beat is a step closer
Closer to the time of a leaf losing it's grip on the mother tree.

A girl walks down the path
Trying with all her might
To be thankful for her priceless life,
She chooses to live
To love,
She looks to God day and night.

This poem holds the essence of the idea that everyone has a story. I believe that everyone holds a part or a piece of at least one of these people in themselves. You don't have to be a dancer or a writer or even a mother. These people have a heart and a spirit that might come close to yours. Maybe the tears cried match the sorrow or the frustration in your own. These people exist in all of us. I just gave them their own story. Because in my heart, I feel like it's a story that needs to be told.
