Masked

Masked

A Poem by Alexa Tarvid

I wear this mask quite well,
Don't I?
Such a trick of sight
As I look through its eyes,

A failure,
That is who has climbed behind this mask,
A coward
With so much empty anger,
A monster,
Caged within itself
And for what?
For society?
For the sake of my pride?

I don't quite know anymore,
What used to be beautiful
And waiting with hope to be shown
Now carries the wrinkles of time not its own,
Scarred by the failures and letdowns,
Burn by the anger and hatred,
A monster,

It rattles the bars of its cage,
I can feel it,
It burns,
Such hideous scars,

But you walk by
And we both give a friendly smile
And a warm greeting,
We exchange a bit about the weather,
Then we are on our own separate ways,

Such a tricky mask,
I think I wear it quite well,
Don't you think?
