Little miss Sunshine~

Little miss Sunshine~

A Poem by Lily Mae

"A memory of my Mother and I...a brand new dress and a hot summers day"

Memories flood my mind of those hot summer days

when I played barefoot in the field of tall grass

collecting flowers...and dreams

as I lay flat on the ground looking

at the vast clear blue sky

The heat permeated my soft child skin

while the thin layer of sweat held

my pretty new cotton dress against me

tight like a soothing blanket

That day was the best

I rarely got a new dress of my own

with two older sisters I usually got their

hand me downs...but this day was the day

I got a brand new dress

it was all mine

When my Mother got back from shopping

that Saturday and laid it out across the table

I grabbed it and put it on immediately

then ran outdoors the second she got on the phone

(you see I wanted everyone to see me in my new dress)

I walked the railroad tracks to the trestle

no one was there swimming or fishing...

I walked around the block

but no one was outdoors playing...

Sitting on my picnic table I see Tuffy

and her puppies

Reaching the gate I opened it up and

took one in my arms..kissed the puppy breath

and walked them all down to the river to play

the warm mud squishing through my toes

felt so good

Wading out into the water

to my knees I stood there in silence

watching the summer suns reflective rays

against the surface while below little minnows

tickled my legs and feet

looking over my shoulder I saw the puppies

playing on shore ...barking at the lapping water

All of this felt so good...I knew the angels could

see me in my new dress...because I felt them

smiling through my heart that day

so content with my little journey

I walk out of the water and play with the smelly

wet puppies and found that the cool mud

of the river soothed the pain of the little

scratches they left on my skin

Hearing my Mother call my name

I took one puppy in my arms while

the others followed me home

I'll never forget the look on her face

when she saw me that day

shock and horror at the sight before her

as her eyes were wild and wide

and her voice let me know all wasn't

right anymore in my peace filled day

My eyes connected with hers and it

was like her body and that moment

together sighed

she bent down smiled at me...put her

finger to my nose and laughed

and I'll never forget her words to me

How could I ever get mad at you...

with those big eyes, a brand new muddy

dress? You little Leigh...are my Sunshine.”

Still stunned with emotion, not knowing

if I was in trouble or just loved

I took my Mothers hand and we walked

to the house where she handed me the hose

to wash myself off...while she sat back

in her lawn chair with her high neck

glass Pepsi bottle and smiled at me...

I remember the beauty in her face that

day as she watched me

the smile and resignation that her daughter

was a cute little Pixie with such innocence

and also the best Tom Boy ever...with squishy

mud still stuck between her toes

All of my new Sunday dress

Thank you..xo
I think we all have moments like that or at least us tom boys do. I remember ripping a pair of brand new jeans. I thought I was going to be in so much trouble but I wasn't. My grandma put a patch on them. Good as new lol

Oh wow Lilykins! I think this is one of my favorites that you've crafted. It carries so much heart and healing love and memory, that I couldn't help but feel the magic of that little dress.
You are an amazing poetess and a gifted weaver of homespun words. This poem has brought to me a smile that I return with a Hug, knowing that there were tears shared with the ink that was used.

Amazing Ink!

Lily our memories are precious because it keeps us in tune with the past. Barbara Kasey Smith
I remember those days in my own shildhood Lily. I especially connected with the line about angels smiling down on your day. I do not remember the last time I actually "felt" the eyes of heaven like I did when I was a child. Yet, I know that even today, the eyes of our heavenly Mother/Father smile down at the silly tender children we are. so mush that we do not understand and so much that we have yet to become. Shall we promise to live a day or two this week letting the living of life get our clean dress up cloths dirty?
Thank you for this blessing Lily!
