August Melancholy

August Melancholy

A Poem by Lisa Lindsey

August came with a sudden haze

of melancholy. We still ran barefooted

along warm summer sidewalks,

but always with the knowledge
that Labor Day lurked at our heels,

signaling the last of the lemonade stands
and lime Popsicles, the tire swing
creaking through windless hours.

It came with a rush of sunset and flash

of street lights, shadows caught in a blink,
a mother dragging us home by the arm.

You brought me back to New Jersey Augusts with this wonderful write. We knew the crisp Autumn air would soon make it necessary to wear jackets and then the snow would fall. We knew summer was over and school was starting. Nice memories....and you bring them to life with your words. Lydi**

This is my favorite time of year, for it ushers in the holidays, and I'm just a kid at heart when it comes to the holidays. But you're right, there is a certain melancholy you feel, knowing that Labor Day is lurking close by.

I always feel melancholy whenever I read your seasonal writes, and I believe I've told you that many times. My pulse just seems to quicken, and my sighs are inhaled a bit deeper whenever I read them. It's the poignancy that makes them come full circle.

I wish you the very best of autumns, my friend!
