Summer's End

Summer's End

A Poem by Lisa Lindsey

Summer’s end is not the corn dolly

hanging from barn rafters.

No booming fireworks eulogize her.

No riderless horse drags her effigy

through the harvest parade. . .

Rather she comes uneventfully,

softly, in creeping fog and morning glories,

in the unfolding of little back yards

strung with empty clotheslines,

and in the sudden urge to bake apples.
A quiet requiem, summer’s end.

Kind of sad but one season's end is another's beginning. They do seem to creep up on us unsuspectingly. You've captured that so well here. "No riderless horse drags her effigy through the harvest parade. . ." Nice job. Enjoyed this very much.

Thanks very much, Pete! Appreciate it.
The little hints of a season leaving us and another taking over. The calendar pages turn and do not cause a fanfare, but we feel those changes. A lovely write....so soft. Lydi**

I haven't had the urge to bake apples yet, but this is quite comforting. :) Skillful portrayal.

Nicely described. Quite poetic!

Thank you Robert!
I could nestle myself within the circumference of a chair and read this, over and over again. You capture the seasons like no other, Lisa...and make us all yearn for their return!

I can't say what it means to me, having you here! ; )
