Chocolates, Vodka

Chocolates, Vodka

A Poem by Brian F. Lockard

a poem about love

I sat down at the bar
Next to a man of fifty,
maybe more
With grey in his hair, his mangled beard
his ears
It was awkward
Not with him
But with a woman
She didn’t want me
I bought her favorite things
 so maybe she would
Whitman's sampler, Skyy
I set them on the bar, appearing
cool, unconfident
Everyone stared
The grey man smiled
The bartender scowled
I ordered a Jack and coke
to beat the nerves
I was young and dumb
and ridiculous
Unlike them
I drained it
and tried not to cough
and ordered another
The grey man asked
A woman?
He knew the answer
but I told him anyway
What is it this time?
He asked me
Nothing, I told him
She’s been getting around
He laughed
a tired, weathered sound
I took another drink,
trying to beat the anger
He laughed
And told me not to worry
He was young once
He settled
Find someone
that would truly enjoy these,
he said to me,
Pointing to my gifts
Someone who cares about you
Then he stumbled outside
to piss in the alley
I finished my drink,
trying to beat the truth
I put a few dollars down
And left the chocolates
and vodka
on the grey man’s seat
And went back the way I came.

Perfect ending to the story. We can learn lesson in the taverns. I was the student and I was the teacher in the taverns for 20 years. I liked the complete story in the poetry. Thank you Brian for sharing the excellent poetry.
