Someone I Once Knew

Someone I Once Knew

A Poem by Brian F. Lockard

another one about "love"

When she lied, she lied of death
(A phantom cancer)
And love
And buddhism
When I lied,
I lied of life
And love
And myself
The leviathans breathed breath
Of fire
Roots, beliefs, cities
Burned to pale ash
All to my vermillion
Shades of elation
And she,
With her insecurities
Written in meretricious ink
Along her stretched frame
Of frames
Looked down
With callow, vacant
Orifices of the skull
Empty, in her religions
Empty, in her soul,
Where the insecurities
Of my own,
relished safe harbor
Exposed, for those deceased eyes
To wander,
To judge
And hand to me,
Not a thing in return
And be as blind of a fool
To accept it
Even so
Many have had the muse
But the false muse
Is the truly majestic creature
The proverbial rara avis
I was not perfect, no
But neither was she
Even as the wine
Allowed us a tangible flow
When the conversations
Left the staircase under
The black sun of
September through February
So long after, her memory
Finally, finally means nothing
A paragraph of a chapter
In a medium forever closed
Her memory,
Immortalized, ironically
By the fire she tried so "valiantly"
To quell

Beautifully crafted poem Brian. I loved the flow of the poem and how towards the end you described "someone I once knew" as just nothing- a paragraph of a chapter in a medium forever closed.

Thank you for reading. Glad you caught the cynicism of it lol

The poem felt real and true. Had the feel of a real life and real person.
"Her memory,
Immortalized, ironically
By the fire she tried so "valiantly"
To quell"
I liked the above lines. Left the reader with something to ponder. Thank you Brian for sharing the powerful poetry.
