You Weren't There

You Weren't There

A Poem by The Advocate
"

Just musings. Meh.

"

I tried to call you Monday

When I first heard the news

Of my longest goal achieved

…but you weren’t there.

I tried to call you when

My son was born

The first male grandchild

…but you weren’t there.

I tried to call you when

I finally found who I’ve been

Looking for all my life

…but you weren’t there.

I tried to call you when

My oldest daughter said

She wanted to live with me

…but you weren’t there.

I’ve tried to call you

Every damned day

Since you’ve passed

…because I wasn’t there.

I know that pain. Even if you (in general) were there, you would still try to call. It's the little moments that make us happy and we want to tell that someone about it, but they're not here to tell. Sometimes I think what it would be like to be 21 and still have Nanny and Grandma here. How proud they would be of me to see me in college getting a degree in something I love. You're trying to make me cry again, aren't you? :)

This is really really good. Captures a deep sorrow. Wonderful job.

Very powerful, the repetition of 'but you weren't there' works really well, especially leading up the the last line.
