Chapter 4

A Chapter by Lady Nikki Nightmare

“You have a heart,” I hissed as I glared at him.

“Yeah, don’t you,” he stuttered. My eyes bore into his own as I began unbuttoning my coat. Once it was unbuttoned, I began to pull my long sleeved tee shirt off. His eyes searched my body as if more was going to happen, but then as his eyes landed on the mark and he froze. He had to have known what it meant, and he must have figured out what I was thinking.

“They are after you because you still have your heart,” I accused him.

“But why would they be,” he questioned furiously.

“Because it is law that since we can successfully have our hearts removed we do have our hearts removed. Usually, for your kind, the heart is removed at birth,” I informed him.

“How do you know all of this,” he half hissed at me almost as if he was angry with me.

“Darlin’ you are twenty years old! I am almost five thousand and one years old. I have out lived every vampire save the Nobles. I know everything about vampires. Not to mention I was the first,” I trailed off as I put my shirt back on. I began to drive once again, without talking. I gripped the steering wheel with such force that I was surprised it didn’t break.

“You were the first what,” he asked slowly as he stared at my chest. He wasn’t checking out my breast. No, he was trying to make the image of the mark leave his poor eyes. I guessed from the look on his face, the look of shock, that he had never been near a real vampire.

“Nothing, never mind about me, the question is why don’t you know about the marks,” I questioned a little too harshly.

“Because I didn’t know about vampires until I was sixteen, and between my birth and the age of sixteen I was raised as a human. The only exception to that was the fact that my mom took me to a hospital when I was younger once a week and I would be injected with blood. I noticed when I hit adolescence that I had a craving for something and I just wasn’t getting what I wanted. I tried girls, I tried performing with a band, hell I even tried a few guys, but I realized what I wanted when I was almost seventeen. I wanted blood and I figured it out when my, at the time, gothic girlfriend was into the vampire scene,” he trailed off as a small smile played on his pale pink lips.

“That’s not ironic at all,” I stated sarcastically. I couldn’t look at him anymore. I sighed as I turned the radio on in hopes of drowning out the terrible sound of his heart.

“I can’t help I’m human,” he stated bluntly.

“Tu eşti nu human , şi tu niciodată voinţă a voi a fi,” I hissed.

“If you can’t say it in English don’t say it at all,” he growled as he turned towards the window.

I looked around as the sky began to lighten. I realized that we had come farther than what I thought. If I could be the sun, in just a few more miles there was an abandoned hotel that wasn’t abandoned at all. Two friends of mine ran a vampire Inn. I looked back towards Luke who appeared to be still angry. I sighed as I turned back towards the road. “I have a questioned,” I half sighed.

“What now,” he barked.

“The sun is coming up. Now it seems to me that you have two choices. Number one, you can rot in the sun, or number two you have a Lapis Lazuli?”

“A what,” he questioned as he turned towards me. I held up my hand so that he could see the ring.

“The stone is called Lapis Lazuli. It was founded by a Spanish vampire and it allows us to be out in the sun without dying,” I explained. He looked at me as if I were insane.

“You can’t go out in the sun either. Damn, vampires are just so not cool anymore,” he stated in disbelief.

“And you can,” I asked skeptically.

“Yes, like I said I’ve known I was half vampire since I was sixteen, and before that I went to a public school during the day,” he answered seriously.

“If that’s the case, that could be another reason the Nobles want you,” I thought aloud. I heard him growl almost too quietly. I rolled my eyes as I began watching the road.

“What are you looking for,” he finally asked. I breathed in deeply as I kept my eyes on the right side of the road.

“There’s going to be an old building that looks a bit like a w***e house, and that is where we are stopping for now,” I explained quietly.

“We are going to a w***e house,” he questioned with a little too much excitement in his voice.

“No, it just appears that way because Aspen and Berlyn have never liked clothes, at least they haven’t in the last one thousand years,” I explained once again. A smile crossed his lips that I wished I wouldn’t have seen. It was one of those gross ‘dog-in-heat’ expressions that males get when a curvy woman is in their grasp.

I sighed loudly as I turned my attention back towards the road. I could tell we were getting closer by the scent of coco butter and jasmine floating on the air. As the warehouse came into sight I could smell the stench of death underneath all of the fragrances of sunbathing lotions

I turned into an empty parking lot. Luke looked like a puppy dying of thirst, and I had to fight to refrain from rolling my eyes. “Wait here,” I instructed him as I got out of the car. I slowly headed towards the door being careful to let the wind take my scent towards the building. I heard Luke’s car door slam shut behind me, and I couldn’t help but to turn and growl at him.

“Stop,” someone shouted from the door. I turned my attention back towards the door but all I could see was the black barrel of some sort of gun.

“See look what you have done.” I hissed over my shoulder towards Luke. I turned back towards the gun and asked carefully, “are Aspen and Berlyn here? I need to speak with them.”

“That depends on who you are,” the voice answered harshly. After listening to it, I had come to realize that the voice sounded male.

“I am Roslyn,” I announced bitterly.

The gun moved slowly back into the crack as the door was pushed open. A man with long dark hair and the bluest eyes stood there. He was shirtless which allowed his muscles to ripple freely along his arms and abdomen. He wore jeans over his legs which looked like pythons, but his feet were bare. He looked familiar, but then again everyone seemed familiar after what I had been through.

The man’s eyes appeared to be filled with shock and awe as he fell to the ground on his knees. He bowed like the ancient Egyptians used to bow to their pharos. I felt a rush flow down my spine at the sight of this because that is how the vampire nation treated me after the surgery. I cringed as he rose from his position.

“I am sorry, Lady Rose, please forgive me,” he begged with his head bowed.

“Please, do not treat me as if I were royalty. I am not of that great of an importance,” I instructed as I walked towards the man. He stood straight and nodded silently. Luke started to run towards me in order to keep up, but the man halted him.

“Who are you,” the man barked at Luke. I couldn’t help but to laugh.

“I believe the question, sir, is who are you,” I laughed as I walked through the door only to be engulfed in a huge bear-hug.
