Chapter (37) THE SPICE RACK

Chapter (37) THE SPICE RACK

A Chapter by MAD ENGLISHMAN
"

MY MUM WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON. SHE RAISED 4 CHILDREN THOUGH WITH VERY LITTLE RESOURCES.

"

THE SPICE RACK

Once, when I was young, my mum she loved to cook.

My mum could make amazing foods and never used a book.

Us kids we sat and sniffed the air to guess what she would make

but birthdays were our favourite because of chocolate  cake.

Much later I was qualified to make foods rich and rare,

But never once, like mum did, I'd find the cupboards bare.

With veggies from the garden she'd cook with cheap cut meats

And cover with thick pie crusts to give us tasty treats.

Sometimes we had so little, my mum would sit and cry

Then dad would bring a rabbit that happened to pass him by.

She'd make it into curry from spices on the wall

And with the soft white sticky rice, it was the best of all.

Dear mum's now gone, her cooking too, and though we're now full grown

The four us we like to cook for children of our own.

Those recipes now don't exist for people would not eat

The things she made from nothing, to give us all a treat.

Many thanks for reading.
The make do and mend generation were true geniuses when it came to making a little go a long way - my own dad made 'chicken curry' only to tell us when we finished it that we had eaten bugs bunny (my words not his). I hope this knowledge is never lost - even of only for posterity M.E.
Your homage stands boldly and is a fitting tribute - kudos !
