Chapter (29) I LIKE TRAINS

Chapter (29) I LIKE TRAINS

A Chapter by MAD ENGLISHMAN

I like Trains,
Not the big dirty ones that smell like drains.
No, I like model trains.
I'm a 64 year old kid, who's really failed to grow,
Got quite a good collection of Hornby double 'O'.
I got houses, streets and trucks, and stations with miles of track,
I never heard of boredom, nor a moment to be slack.
My wife thinks I'm just crazy, to play with chuffing toys,
I tell her it's a hobby, especially for boys.
With electronic signals, and trains that blow fake smoke,
to appreciate it all, you really need to be a bloke.
Tiny people made of plastic, and difficult to paint,
Take hours to get it right, think it's easy? It ain't.
The hills are made of plaster all covered in tiny trees,
The whole layout is planned and designed just to please.
With a flag and a hat and a whistle made of tin,
I'm in my zone, I close the door, my missus can't come in.
I throw the switch, the power's on, the little lights they flicker,
Turn it some more and hold on tight to make the trains go quicker.
I've got loads of friends the same as me, I met them on the 'Net'
They're just like me and understand how obsessive I can get.
It's not just my hobby, it's a passion, a way of life,

I wish there was a way I could explain it to my wife.

Itsounds like a lot of fun.

Believe it or not, when I was a little girl one of the things I most wanted was a model train set--and they were nothing compared to the ones today.

I never got it. Your poem makes me think about that...and I still regret it a little...
