Ambient Non-Lethal Radiation and Resultant Pokémon Colour Variance found in the Region of Rynara

"

On the -- rather large -- Island of Rynara, there is something in the air.

... And something in the water. In the trees, in the soil, in the food

exported from there.

Perhaps this last one will lead to occurances of RICCS(Radiation Induced

Colour/Characteristic Shift) outside of the Region.

RICCS is a condition whereby exposure to the seeminly natural ambient

radiation present throughout much of Rynara leads to populations of

Pokémon having an unusual colour for their species.

Sometimes, if they are of mixed heritage, it is a case of 'bleed through'

from the species opposite to what they are, or even carried over from a

grandparent or great-grandparent(up to three 'greats' of inheritence have

been recorded so far in this way!).

Sometimes it is simply a shift from the base colour, a random twist thrown

in by some as-yet-unidentified gene being affected by this radiation.

It can make purples deeper, greens lighter, anything really. Dramatic

shifts in colour can even occur, with a normally brown species being more

of a creamy or even pure white colouring, an orange species being green or

red, or yellow instead. Even brown, and sometimes pink, can be expected

from this odd phenomenon.

It's something that is harder to track with local species, since they may

have been that way all along, or their species has always had a colour-

changing aspect to them(perhaps because of the radiation anyway).

But for imported species, or ones who have been abandoned into the local

area by visiting trainers, we can easily see the changes that are wrought,

because we know that all over the world, in every place they are found,

they are more or less the same colour.

It doesn't stop there! It can also have an effect on physical form; Length

and size of claws can be reduced or enhanced, how curly or straight a

feature such as tails or ears will be.

And so much more!

But that is another article for another day.

For now, we will focus on the colour aspect of RICCS.

Further research must be done, with controls to compare against, to

determine what else could be contributing to this.

Are the Guileer of Artymos City a paler, more lime-like green because a

different gene was affected by the ambient radiation? Or was it the same

gene in a different way? Is it something to do with their diet? Or

something else entirely!?

There is much to learn before we can say with confidence we understand

more than just a fraction of what is there to be uncovered.

On to some species you may be more familiar with. Our example species for

this will be Teddiursa.

Teddiursa who are born and raised in Rynara come in several colours, while

those from outside the Region are only in a standard 'brown' or reddish-

brown, cinnamon, shall we say.

They are found to be a dazzling white, much like the Cubchoo of Unova,

when located in the Gnargur Range to the north.

And there are also a sort of marmalade-orange kind in quite a few places

around the Region.

If you are something of a traveller, though, you may also come across some

soft, honey-yellow examples in a few isolated pockets.

These are known to the inhabitants of Rynara as Gnargur Teddiursa,

Marmalade Teddiursa and Sunshine Teddiursa.

It would do well to point out these populations have more than just colour

and location seperating them. The northern Teddiursa are quite a deal

shaggier than any other kind, perhaps to better indure the cold.

While the soft, yellow specimens have an almost puffy texture, though much

shorter than the northern variety. The short, puffed out fur is what led

to their 'nickname.'

The Marmalade Teddiursa physically have the most in common with their

foreign counter-parts, mostly just being a different colour, though, like

the Sunshine Teddiursa, they are more inclined to live in large groups.

Unlike the Sunshine Teddiursa, however -- perhaps due to the more

sheltered habitats of Sunshines, leading to them being more trusting of

others -- a Marmalade Teddiursa is almost dependant on their social group.

Being separated from them can quickly(how quick depends on the individual)

cause extreme anxiety in them, and if one is to capture one and bring it

on your journey with you, you must choose a relatively young one and spend

time introducing and socialising them with your existing team.

Failure to do so could lead to numerous problems down the road, the only

cure to which would be to return them to their family group and hope not

too much time has passed and that they will be accepted back into the fold

without too many issues.

Another Pokémon example?

Perhaps one from the Unova Region. Rynara has close ties to Unova, due to

the ancestors of the local, human population having fled the Region at the

time of a great cataclysm, and as such there are a good number of Unovan

species who were introduced by the trainers who brought them along.

Hmmm... let's make it... Whimsicott?

A similar scenario plays out with this species.

While most have white fleece, there are examples of *individual* mutations

not yet widespread, where the fleece is of a differing colour. Mostly

pale, they have not yet differentiated far enough from the base colour to

be too brightly coloured.

Soft pinks and yellows, baby blues, there are even three confirmed

sightings of a pale green fleece!

But, as I said, most -- approximately three quarters -- have the usual

white-ish fleece.

It's the body where they mostly differ.

Roughly 60% are a darker brown than found in Unova, almost a dark

chocolate colour. The green of the stalk is also slightly darker.

About 20% of Whimsicott found in the Rynara Region are a sort of navy blue

in the body, maintaining the Unovan green of the stalk.

A further 15% are found to be lime-green, with a stalk leaning more

towards lime as well.

The remaining 5% are white of body, fleece and an odd white-green of

stalk. They also have ruby-red eyes and because of this are believed to be

albino.

The very thing we wish to study, RICCS, is that which makes it so hard to

know if one has spotted another colour variance, or the coveted -- and

difficult to identify -- 'shiny' variance of a species.

The ability to identify shiny individuals through a blood-test is

something of no value to other regions, where it is almost immediately

obvious what you have found, but is an area of great focus in Rynara.

Perhaps one day, in conjunction with an enhanced scanning function of the

Pokédex, we will be able to determine whether a Rynaran Pokémon is 'shiny'

on the fly by simply waving the device in their direction!

Thank you for taking the time to read this article on such an intriguing

and challenging subject!

About
A Marmalade Bear is similar to a Cinnamon Bear(a natural colour variation of the American Black Bear), but less of the red-brown and more of the golden-orange. You can attempt to google it if you .. more..
