Cosmos Revisited

Cosmos Revisited

A Poem by Mark Pearce

Einstein told us to think this way. Who am I to differ?

I licked the cosmos.

It tasted like minty ice cream.
The stars like sugar sprinkles.
The planets like dirty worms.

The texture was uneven,
Galaxies being what they are,
But most of ‘em were swirly.

A delicious endeavor,
This intergalactic sampling,
But then my tongue hit a dark hole
And my face disappeared.

It’s sitting up there somewhere
Locked within the confines
Of an event horizon.

A surprised look
Frozen for eternity.

Clever use of the sensual and earthy to describe something most often described with "heavenly" phrases and images. Love that trickster twist at the end. I really enjoy your playful take on the world and, in this case, the universe. Refreshing!

This is excellent work. Vivid, fun, and creative.
Your knowledge of astronomy is used but not pushed in a classroom way.....
more like presented as a new and interesting dish........
I believe our souls are actually stars and we are only here to visit, call me crazy, that's just my opinion.
Thus the last line is, to me, perfect and precious.
Thank you Mark Pierce.

Welcome to The Lotus Eaters' group. Yours is the featured poetry this week. I enjoyed the whimsical illustration of science.

Carl Sagan bounced a check on me once, but that's another story for another time...wonderfully clever take on the cosmic and all-encompassing, taking the grandest stage there is and reducing it to the everyday, almost to the level of a six-year old with the refernces of worms and sprinkles. Highly inventive, utterly charming.

It is so sensual. I love the descriptiveness and how it just pulls you in. I had to read it several times. nice.

The thought of one simply holding the universe on top a cone as they enjoy their day, licking away before it melts in self-destruction is very vivid. Well done!

What an intriquing write - I like the idea of both the macrocosmic and microcosmic coming into play here. Most see things in their own little way - so simply and small - your look here at things in such a fancifully, masterly, macro way is quite interesting. Beautifully written. Thank you for sharing.

Another great poem. It moves very well from carefree and fun to cryptic and a little dark. I love the lines "I licked the cosmos" and "The texture was uneven, Galaxies being what they are." Though I got a little confused at "Of an event horizon." Is it supposed to be "even?" If not, then don't mind me. You have a gift for writing. I can tell you'll do well here.
