Hello, Dolly!

Hello, Dolly!

A Poem by Max

Hello, Dolly,

Well hello, Dolly!

It’s so nice to have you back

where you belong…

Why isn’t my life a musical?

A big, campy, over-the-top show

with totally unnecessary quantities of singing and dancing?

I just want to put on my Sunday clothes

and ride that train into New York

to meet the love of my life in a hat shop.

I’m young, but that won’t last.

I want to live my life

and see a world outside of Yonkers

before the parade passes by

and I become a lonely, cranky old man

who’s never known love.

You know,

it only takes a moment

to be loved a whole life long.

I just want to walk down to the Harmonia Gardens

on 14th street,

hand in hand with my new found love,

feigning elegance.

I want to sit down to an expensive meal,

only to watch the waiters prance around with brooms

in a synchronized manner for a good five minutes

before they sweep up my roast pheasant

that they so carelessly dropped

while dancing.

My love and I,

we’d dance the night away

to Louis Armstrong’s band.

And I’d feel my heart about to burst,

and my head about to pop,

‘cus now that we’re dancing

who cares if we ever stop?

That’s where I’d like to be.

That’s where I belong.

And fellas, I promise

I’ll never go away again.
