Chapter 7

Akiza

I was in a furious rage.      I was walking down Main Street, through old houses with barbed wire lining the fence. There was trash, cigarettes, and broken bottles everywhere along with the smell of beer and smoke. Everything looked hazy, was I crying? I felt a wet line along my cheek. I quickly wiped my eyes and sat on a cleaner piece of sidewalk. I stared out in front of me, my eyes uncomprehending, when an old friend of mine came into view. She saw me and ran toward me her arms wide open. I stood up and she pulled me in to a tight hug “Akiza! I’m so glad to have found you! After we split up the others and I regrouped and we’ve been searching for you ever since. What happened after the police raided our hideout?” Then she remembered. “Anyway, I’m glad I found you. “ I loved Hannah, ever since she found me on the side of the road. She and the others adopted me into their group of rebel girls.   Anyway, she and I walked back to where they had apparently made their new hideout. I held my arms out for all 13 of my friends as they all rushed into hug me. Except Vickie, of course, but that’s because she doesn’t show much emotion (Hannah because we’d already greeted each other). But even she waved and smiled, which for her was like kissing and hugging combined! I looked around and saw Hannah, Vickie, Alexa, Regan, Isabelle, Lauren, Lilly, Lindsay, Leanne, Catherine, Leah, Julia, Zoey, Erin, and Amira. All sixteen of us were here. I smiled; this was the happiest place on earth I could ever possibly imagine. Suddenly the silence was broken by a choked cry of pain, it was Vickie.     All my friends turned to stare, as if in slow motion. Vickie collapsed on the ground, convulsing and making horrible, sickly sounds. Of everyone, I react the fastest. I tapped Hannah on the shoulder and made running motions. She nodded and yelled “everyone get away from her, this place is too infested to live near anymore. To the dump!” After that everything became a blur as we ran from the horrible sight while hot tears fell of our faces like rivers.        We ran for what seemed like eternity, our lungs burning, our hearts bleeding, and our eyes tearing. But it was probably only a couple of minutes. Eventually we came to a stop and registered that we were sitting on a tall pile of garbage in the dump. “We sleep here tonight guys!” Hannah said. “We move again in the morning!” Without warning one of the girls, Zoey, pushed forward from the clump of girls. “Aren’t we at least going to say a few words?” she asked. “Tomorrow,” Hannah answered tiredly. So with that happy thought, we made camp and fell into a troubled sleep. Those of us that could fall asleep did, anyway. I for one was wide awake thinking of all of today’s horrors and replaying them in my head. Eventually exhaustion took over, and even I fell asleep.
