Heaven or Hades

Heaven or Hades

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

Put me in the pine wood,
Wrap me in a sheet,
Don't gussy me up
With makeup,
Embalming fluid
Before I my Maker meet.
He knows what I look
Like, He made me.
I'm not an afreet!
Don't put me in a suit,
Tie or a tux, after all,
I'm not on a dinner
date;
I am going to Heaven
Or Hades,
Not a Black 'n White Ball
On Grosvenor Place
I don't need to look
Ravishing, I'm dead,
So don't varnish the box
I lay in state, or I will tarnish
The bed you lie in awake,
And as an incubus,
With your wife, come
To make hay.
Get my last wish right,
Or I will come back
into my afterlife
And cause you fright
Until you yourself
Want to die,
Or dig me up
And get it right!

Maxwell, I like this piece. It's raw and in your face. It speaks to our twisted traditions of dressing up the dead and ceremoniously sending them off to a muddy hole. And, your message to the living is clear. Don't make yourself better, or project what you want with my death. Instead, let's get this over with and move on.
