Yellow Orchid

Yellow Orchid

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

a yellow orchid
in the WC,
perched uncertainly
on the parapet,
between tissue and sink,
watered by glass beads;
a bridge grafittied:
"I need sweet weed,"
sprayed for
a private audience
who pays a ticket
between cities;
train cars of coal
to burn in crematoria,
their extinction
warming souls,
breeding future
holocausts.

I once read yellow orchids represent friendship, joy and new beginnings. It appears you’ve cleverly turned that meaning upside.

We leave and see symbols everywhere we travel, and like poetry, each symbol means something different to each viewer. I much prefer orchids in a fenced garden, far from the graffiti and crematoria. Still scratching my head over this one. :)
