May I

May I

A Poem by Meraki

May I love you
Like I've always loved you
From the time we first opened
Our eyes

May I love you
Like I've loved you
When we first thought the world
Was mostly light

May I love you
Like I've loved you
When we glared at ourself
With disgust in our eyes
Willing ourself to change

May I love you
Like I've loved you
When we finally realized
How alone we were
When we turned our back to ourself
And the world abandoned us
And we feared what we'd see
When we looked in the mirror

May I love you
Like I've loved you
When we looked
And our eyes had shone with wonder
At the perfect stranger we'd become

May I love you
Like I've loved you
During those long sleepless nights
Delving deeper into the mystery
Exploring our memories
Shifting through thoughts
Our dark terrifying places
Being projected and known
Relearning who we are
What we've become

May I love you
Like I've loved you
From the beginning
Until the end
